To celebrate the World Cup finals, and to conclude Yahoo!’s Penalty Shootout , Yahoo! took the two world finalists from Mexico and the USA to Marina da Glória, in Rio de Janeiro. On Saturday, July 10th, the two finalists shot against former Arsenal and England goalkeeper David Seaman to try to win the Yahoo! Sports Pass — two tickets to four of the world’s greatest sporting events over the next four years, culminating in the Brazil World Cup in 2014.
Wesley McElroy of the USA and Omar Fragoso of Mexico flipped a coin, and Omar was chosen to take the first penalty. Despite their best efforts, neither Weslet or Omar took the prize after five shots each, so the game went to sudden death. But nerves seemed to get the better of Omar, and crucially he hit the post. Finally, Wesley stepped up and despite suffering from two pulled hamstrings, he fired home a powerful winning strike to be crowned the winner of the Yahoo! Sports Pass.
His wife Christine charged on to the pitch and shared a loving embrace — a second reason to celebrate as they are also sharing their first wedding anniversary.
Wesley graciously accepted the Yahoo! Sports Pass from David Seaman and took us all by surprise. He graciously offered to give one of his trips to the runner up.
